A little less than 835 million Europeans crossed the threshold of a movie theatre in 2024.
Movie theatres across Europe managed to limit the decline in attendance, even during a year when the turbulence in the US film industry had repercussions across much of the world. In the Old Continent the overall drop in attendance averaged 1.7%: we can consider it a sign of stabilization, largely driven by the strong performance of local production in several markets.
But the real benchmark for cinema-going trends remains the gap compared to 2019, the last pre-pandemic year.
In the 34 countries analyzed by MEDIA Salles, about 25 out of every 100 moviegoers have yet to return, but this is the average that emerges from very different situations.
While in Montenegro, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, Serbia, and France, the number of spectators to be regained is no more than 15 out of 100, in Turkey, more than 40 are missing.
The map below shows this disparity at a glance.
